José Marques da Silva Foundation Institute is located in Praça do Marquês (Porto), comprising two buildings of great historical and architectural value in Porto: the former palatial house of the family Lopes Martins and the Residence-Atelier of Marques da Siva. The well-known architect José Marques da Silva was born in 1869, in rua de Costa Cabral, in the city of Porto. He studied architecture in the fine arts schools of Porto and Paris, where he received several awards for his works. José Marques da Silva returned to Portugal in 1896, starting developing a set of remarkable projects that were decisive in the transformation of Porto’s urban landscape such as, São Bento Railway Station. Marques da Silva’s Residence-Atelier was built in 1909 in a lot that was given and detached from the former palatial house of Lopes Martins’ family, the family of Marques da Silva’s wife, D. Maria Júlia Lopes Martins. The building combines the traditional use of granite with romantic architecture solutions that can be seen in the façade, denoting a very characteristic eclecticism associated to Marques da Silva’s architecture. The main goal of Marques da Silva Foundation Institute is to promote and to highlight the artistic and architectural heritage of the architect José Marques da Silva and also the literary, artistic, architectural and urban heritage of the architects Maria José Marques da Silva and David Moreira da Silva (Source: José Marques da Silva Foundation Institute (FIMS) and Jorge Ricardo Pinto (2011), Bonfim - Território de Memórias e Destinos).
