Nova Sintra Baron’s College
The Baron of Nova Sintra – José Joaquim Leite Guimarães – was a rich and influent Portuguese man who lived several years in Brazil, where he earned his fortune. After living in Brazil, José Guimarães travelled around Europe and established his residence first in Lisbon and then in Porto. In 1863 a humanitarian establishment was founded by this man, which was located in the old slaughterhouse of Porto, near Fontainhas area. A few years later the Baron of Nova Sintra decided to build a large property for his humanitarian establishment in the current “rua do Barão de Nova Sintra” which was inaugurated in 1866 by Luís I, King of Portugal. After Nova Sintra Baron’s death, his building and establishment was owned by the charity institution “Santa Casa da Misericordia do Porto” (Source: Jorge Ricardo Pinto (2011), Bonfim - Território de Memórias e Destinos).
